Our first stop will be at the Audubon Center in West Alton, MO where we will see an eagle documentary, bird watch from inside the center and take a guided tour around the grounds. We may see an ever-changing variety of 325 species of songbirds and waterfowl that live in or migrate through this unique habitat. View bald eagles, herons, egrets and dozens of species of waterfowl up close in the quiet waters of Ellis Bay.
We will then travel across the river and have lunch at The Old Bakery Beer Company located inside the beautiful old Colonial Bakery building in downtown Alton, IL. Part of the building started its life as a bakery in the late 1800’s. After a fire in 1929 and a series of remodels, additions, and changes in ownership, the building remained a bakery until the early 1980’s.
After lunch, we will go to the Melvin Price Locks and Dam where we will see the best view of Alton and the Mississippi River from eight stories in the air atop the dam. As one of the largest locks on the Mississippi River, the Melvin Price Locks & Dam is central to river traffic for soybeans, corn, grain, asphalt and other commodities that are transported via the river. We will take a guided tour of this fun attraction and possibly see towboats and barges as they push their way through this incredible structure.
